Yesterday (5th Jan 06) while at work, one of our production workers got his hand caught in the 3 Gal ice cream machine while cleaning it. The Machine was off at the time but came on unknown. The blades in the machine shattered the bone in his right arm up to his wrist and also tore off the flesh at the top part of his hand just before the fingers.

I was not at my desk at the time but heard my name being called, so I asked what happened and was told to call the ambulance. After I made the report, I made my way from the front office to the production area expecting to see his hand amputated, because they said only the bone can be seen and his hand is gone. You have no idea how relieved I was to see his hand still attached, everyone was in a panic afraid to touch him because of the blood and not knowing what to do.

I just told the other production workers to get me a pair of gloves and a clean rag, I entered the room and I held on to the wound on his hand and another production worker held up his arm above the elbow to give him support while he lay on the ground. The best I could do was keep him from panicking because he was really worried about losing his hand, we stayed like that till help came, believe me it was not easy.

Some of the workers and I visited him in the hospital this afternoon and he is doing really well, some pain but he's a fighter. I told him yesterday as well as today that I am very proud of him, as we say in TnT he took it like a man, in between crying and cursing, laughing and everything else. :-))

He was on the operating table for 5 hours yesterday and has another operation on Wednesday coming. The doctors placed steel rods in his arm to keep the bones together (yeah it's that bad). There is a 20% risk of him losing his hand to the elbow if it becomes infected, I'm just glad it's not infected and was not infected when he arrived at hospital.

Everyone in work said I saved his life, I'm a hero and I did what no one else was able to do. Me, I just did what I had to do which was not much but that little by God's grace means, a 19 year old will be able to keep his hand for the rest of his life and that's praise enough for me.

I just want to thank God that he gave me the strength to face a situation like that without a hitch and that this young man has a fighting chance. God is good all the time and all the time God is good. Please keep him in your prayers.
